In a groundbreaking move to enhance the pilgrimage and visitor experience, Saudi authorities have officially sanctioned the solemnization of marriage contracts (Nikah ceremonies) at the revered Makkah Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque in Madina – the two holiest sites in Islam.
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah revealed this progressive initiative, opening doors for meticulously planned weddings to unfold within the sacred precincts of the Makkah Grand Mosque and Madina's Prophet's Mosque, as reported by Al Watan news.
This unprecedented decision provides a unique opportunity for event companies to devise innovative approaches that honor the sanctity of these iconic locations, as noted by industry experts.
Renowned Saudi mazoun, or marriage official, Musaed Al Jabri, emphasized the Islamic permissibility of signing marriage contracts at mosques, citing the historical precedent set by Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) himself for a friend.
Al Jabri shared insights into the common practice of signing marriage contracts at the Prophet's Mosque in Madina, particularly due to logistical considerations. He explained that often, due to space constraints, the family of the bride cannot accommodate all guests, leading to contracts being signed at significant mosques like the Prophet's Mosque or the Quba Mosque, the first mosque in Islam.
Highlighting the spiritual significance, Al Jabri mentioned the belief that blessings and good fortune accompany Nikah contracts being signed at these holy sites.
However, Al Jabri outlined certain etiquette for attendees, stressing the prohibition of loud noises that could disrupt worshipers. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of respecting the sanctity of the holy places by avoiding excessive consumption of coffee, sweets, or food during the ceremony.
With millions of Muslims, both local and international, participating in Umrah at the Makkah Grand Mosque annually, along with visits to the Prophet's Mosque and other significant Islamic sites in Madina, this groundbreaking decision marks a significant development in facilitating sacred unions within the heart of Islam.
