Revolutionizing Pilgrimage: Air Taxis Set To Connect Jeddah And Grand Mosque
Category: Saudi Arabia

In a groundbreaking move, Saudia, Saudi Arabia's national carrier, is set to introduce a cutting-edge air taxi service ferrying pilgrims between Jeddah and the Grand Mosque, the holiest site in Islam. This innovative initiative involves the acquisition of 100 Lilium jets, advanced German electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, for seamless transportation between King Abdulaziz airport in Jeddah and designated airstrips in Mecca hotels near the Grand Mosque and other sacred locations.

The director of Saudia's corporate communication, Abdullah Al Shahrani, revealed that these eVTOL aircraft are designed to accommodate up to six passengers, promising a swift and comfortable travel experience for pilgrims. The airline is currently collaborating with legal institutions in the country to secure flying permits for this groundbreaking electric aircraft, anticipating a transformative impact on transportation during Umrah and the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Al Shahrani emphasized that this would mark the debut of such advanced aviation technology in the kingdom, although the exact commencement date remains undisclosed.

With nearly 2 million pilgrims participating in the Hajj pilgrimage last year, a return to pre-pandemic levels, and a record-breaking 13.5 million Umrah pilgrims, the demand for efficient and modern transportation solutions has never been higher. The introduction of eVTOL air taxis aligns with Saudi Arabia's commitment to enhancing pilgrimage experiences.

Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, has recently unveiled various facilities and eased restrictions to facilitate the influx of pilgrims. Visa holders can now enter the kingdom through all land, air, and sea outlets. Additionally, Saudi citizens can invite friends from abroad to undertake Umrah, and female pilgrims no longer require male guardians as escorts.

As part of its inclusive approach, the kingdom welcomes expatriates residing in Gulf Cooperation Council countries to apply for tourist visas, irrespective of their profession. This groundbreaking air taxi service not only represents a technological leap in transportation but also reflects Saudi Arabia's dedication to making pilgrimage accessible and convenient for individuals worldwide. Experience the future of pilgrimage with Saudia's revolutionary air taxis, set to redefine the journey between Jeddah and the Grand Mosque.
