The Saudi National Center for Wildlife (NCW) has issued a crucial advisory urging the public to avoid approaching orca whales following a recent sighting in the waters surrounding the Farasan Islands in the southern Jazan region.
In a video clip shared on its official X account on Sunday, the NCW reported the presence of orcas in the Farasan Islands Reserve. These marine mammals are renowned for their intelligence and intricate social structure, holding significant importance in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. The orca whale, positioned at the apex of the food chain, plays a vital ecological role by regulating the populations of other marine creatures.
Responding to inquiries regarding the potential danger posed by orcas compared to sharks, the center clarified, "While no incidents of orcas attacking humans have been recorded, it is strongly advised not to approach or swim with them due to their considerable size and the unpredictability of their actions."
The orca, also known as the killer whale, belongs to the toothed whale category and stands as the largest member of the oceanic dolphin family. Identified by their distinctive black-and-white patterned bodies, orcas command respect and caution when encountered in their natural habitat.
