About 51 percent of the 4,287 participants in a study conducted by the Ministry of Commerce and Investment did not know the advantages of registering their trade brands in the Ministry of Commerce. While 19 percent of the participants responded with wrong answers, 30 percent responded correctly to the questions put on its Twitter account.
A question put to the participants was about the period of protection guaranteed by the registration. The ministry said the registration protects a trade mark 10 years, the registration fee of the trademark is SR7,500, and the application could be made electronically.
The registration protects a trade mark owner from complaints of property rights, ensures that there is no confusion among consumers about the products, and makes the marketing method of the product effective and less costly. It also makes the trademark an asset of the company and a source of strength against competitors. A trade mark can also be sold or leased.
