A man and a woman were killed after their vehicle collided with a truck after hitting a stray camel, leading to their vehicle veering off and colliding with another truck, local media reported.

According to reports, three girls were injured in the accident on the Bisha-Al Jubeh road. They were transferred to King Abdullah Hospital in Bisha.

Upon hearing about the incident, Saudi Civil Defence, Red Crescent, police, and traffic teams rushed to the scene, where the man and woman were found dead and their bodies were recovered from the wreckage.

A number of citizens and road users have called on the Ministry of Transport to improve the Bisha-Al Jubeh road, which witnesses heavy traffic throughout the year.

More than 1.4 million camels are estimated to exist in Saudi Arabia. Riyadh region has the largest herd of camels and their population is estimated to be about 322,57; followed by the Eastern region with around 256,079 camels.

There have been several accidents involving camels in Saudi Arabia over the past few years, especially since camels have a tendency to cross roads unexpectedly. Because of this, Saudi Arabia came up with several countermeasures to alleviate the heavy losses from such accidents.

Camel owners who leave their herds wandering onto the roads have been fined heavily by the Ministry of Interior. Accordingly, the law will penalise owners of camels that cause road accidents. Moreover, the authorities erected fences to keep animals from wandering. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia created a nationwide camel database by microchipping every camel in the country to keep track of their owners and ensure their safety.
