Health Risks Of Perfume Spraying: Saudi Toxicologist Warns Against Common Practice In Shopping Centres
Category: Saudi Arabia

Spraying perfumes at potential customers in shopping centres is a widespread promotional tactic. However, Saudi toxicologist Magdy Jamal Al Layl has raised concerns about the health risks associated with this practice.

Perfume Spraying in Malls: A Hazardous Practice

Perfume shops often spray their products to attract customers, but this habit might cause more harm than good. Al Layl emphasized that excessive exposure to perfumes can lead to serious health issues, particularly for individuals suffering from allergies or asthma.

Risks for Allergy and Asthma Sufferers

Al Layl warns that for individuals suffering from allergies or asthma, exposure to perfumes can significantly worsen symptoms. He stated:

Frequent exposure to perfumes may also result in skin irritation, eye redness, and severe allergic reactions such as rashes and headaches.

Violation of Personal Space and Privacy

Beyond the health risks, Al Layl pointed out that spraying perfumes unasked could be seen as a violation of personal space. He emphasized that not everyone appreciates being exposed to fragrances, especially in public spaces.

Poor Quality Perfumes Pose Additional Hazards

According to Al Layl, some perfumes used in promotional activities are of low quality or unknown origin, increasing the potential danger. These products may contain harmful chemicals, particularly when used in large quantities.

Hormonal Disruptions and Skin Issues

“Some perfumes contain chemicals and alcohols that may affect hormones and cause skin irritation,” he said. These compounds are particularly harmful to those with existing sensitivities.

Perfumes' Impact on Sensitive Individuals

For those who are more sensitive to fragrances, Al Layl mentioned that symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, and coughing can develop quickly upon exposure to strong-smelling perfumes.

The Growing Perfume Market in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi perfume market is thriving, with an estimated value of $1.8 billion in 2023. This rise in perfume use increases the likelihood of more people being exposed to the risks associated with perfume spraying.
