According to a Saudi lawyer, harassing children is a grave crime punishable by law.
Those found guilty of harassing or sexually assaulting children will be jailed for not less than 2 years nor more than 5 years, as well as fined not less than SR300,000 and not more than SR500,000.
Lawyer Amal Aseelan told Al Ekhbariya TV that 70 percent of child molesters are acquaintances or relatives because they have easy access to children.
If the victim is a person with special needs, or a parent, or over 60 years old, or a pregnant woman who miscarried as a result of the abuse, the penalty will be doubled.
Furthermore, the penalty will be doubled if the abuse occurred at the workplace, a study center or prayer area, or if the perpetrator is someone with authority to apply the law.
Saudi law also prohibits producing, publishing, displaying, circulating or possessing any printed, visual or audio work directed at a child if it encourages a behavior contrary to Islamic Shariah or public order or public morals, or instigates behavioral or intellectual deviations."
