The Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) launched the Geological Risk Base Platform on Tuesday, the first digital scientific platform to educate the public about natural hazards.
Besides making seismic data available to the community, the portal will expedite the activation of agreements and requests that the authority implements, such as studies and seismic risk assessments.
Bandar Alkhorayef, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources and Chairman of SGS's Board of Directors, launched the platform. During the 44th meeting of the authority's Board of Directors, a launching ceremony was held.
The meeting was also attended by Deputy Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources for Mining Affairs Eng. Khalid Al-Mudayfer, CEO of SGS Eng. Abdullah Al-Shamrani, members of the board of directors, and a number of SGS senior officials.
The aim of the new platform, according to Tariq Aba Al-Khail, is to make seismic data available as a “digital electronic page that contains all information related to seismic data and maps in and around Saudi Arabia.” The platform, he said, will assist in providing technical solutions to prevent potential risks in the future and will assist in improving infrastructure solutions. There will be a lot of seismic data on the platform that will support research and spread geological hazards awareness.
According to Aba Al-Khail, the geological hazards platform is Saudi Arabia's first digital scientific platform that educates on seismic hazards. In addition to being able to easily access information, the platform allows users to examine seismic activity data everywhere, view relevant data and maps, and view relevant data and maps. Researchers and specialists can also request this data and use it for scientific research studies," he said.
